I never imagined that looking at an orchid flower would bring such joy. When I was a kid, I never said I wanted to be an orchidist but yet here I am.. an orchidist, a lover of orchids. I have the privilege of seeing literally thousands of orchids. Many just take your breath away. I hate to admit it, but I've even gotten misty eyed while admiring the beauty of an orchid flower. I am sure it is because I admire them so much that I happen upon a black orchid called Paphiopedilum Astro Boy (Paph. Makuli x Paph. rothschildianum).
A real black orchid is markedly unusual making them very rare. The normally occurring flower color of Paphiopedilum Astro Boy is green and maroon. A black "mutation" like this is very unusual and special. Enjoy!

It is befitting that a black orchid would bloom just in time for Halloween. I know Halloween celebrates goons and goblins but who cares? Halloween is about everything ghoulish.. even a black orchid. Behold a real black orchid plant in bud. The name of the orchid is Paphiopedilum Astro Boy. A real black lady slipper orchid.
This is the second time I have seen a black orchid produced by Paphiopedilum Astro Boy. The first time I saw the black orchid was in 2004 in the greenhouse then a second time at an orchid show. The orchid at the orchid show was also black but it was not Paphiopedilum Astro Boy. Here you have an orchid plant that normally produces a different flower than a black flower. That is a mutation. Therefore, all real black orchids are mutations making this a rare orchid indeed.
This is only the second time I have seen a black orchid in twelve years but then again I haven't attended many orchid shows lately but I love orchid shows. The photos of the black orchid with a gray background were taken on September 29, 2011.

Q: The plant in the accompanying photo has become highly invasive in one area of my yard and is beginning to show up in other areas. I can't always get the root out. I have this notion of a widespread underground network given its rapid growth in numbers. Can you identify and provide some clues for eradication?

A: When I studied the photo you sent of this weed's flowers, I thought they looked mightily like orchids. But an orchid weed? How could that be? Everyone loves orchids! And don't they need tender care to survive at all?

My question is the directions that came with the plant say water every 20 days and fertilize every other month with 10-10-10 or 12-12-12.

A: Phalaenopsis or moth orchids tend to thrive on what seems neglect: Water every three weeks and fertilization every other month. The "10-10-10" or "12-12-12" refers to a balanced fertilizer with equal amounts of nitrogen, phosphate and potassium, the macro-nutrients that all plants need for growth and development.

In the wild, orchids depend on decomposing leaves for most of their nutrients. They don't need much.

For best results, use a water-soluble fertilizer specifically designed for orchids. According to experts, orchids planted in bark may need a higher amount of nitrogen (the first number in that three-digit formula) because the decaying bark will use up a lot of the available nitrogen, leaving little for the plant. That's why some orchid foods are 30-10-10, for example.

Before feeding, water the plant well and get its bark or other planting medium moist but not soggy. Discard any water and/or fertilizer that accumulates in the pot's saucer or decorative container; standing water can cause the orchid to rot.

I have always been fond of Cattleya orchid plants. What makes them so alluring to me is that they are true epiphytic plants or air plants. They rely on the air you and I breathe to live. Cattleya orchids extract nutrients from the air to survive. They use their root system to cling to trees (but they don't harm the tree) where they grow like they have grown for hundreds of years. Taiwanese florist rose from a street stall to ‘Oscars’

Cheng Hsiu-wei (鄭秀煒), who began a career in floral design by selling flowers as a street vendor, won a gold medal at the Chelsea Flower Show for outstanding floral design on May 24 in London. Now she says she hopes one day to decorate Buckingham Palace with orchids from Taiwan.
“This is not only a dream. Dreams come true when they are heartfelt,” she said.
Cheng began selling earrings, necklaces and nail polish at a street stall after graduating from college.

Miniature Moth Orchid Plants All The Rage

Big things do come in small packages like diamonds and pearls.. which have high unit value (high unit value is the value of something relative to size.. if something is small and very valuable, it has a high unit value). Woohoo! So I propose we include small flowering moth orchid plants in this group. Miniature moth orchids are the jewels of the orchid kingdom not only to have in an orchid collection but to give as gifts and enjoy in the home.

I am very lucky to be around orchids all the time. Not a day goes by where I don't see an orchid plant of some type. Lately these plants have been getting smaller. It started late 2010 when I saw my first miniature moth orchids at an orchid show. I asked the orchid grower what was up with these miniature orchids. He said miniature moth orchids have been grown in Japan for many years and it is just catching on here in the United States. The timing of the arrival of these miniature beauties could not be better. The economy is down and we want more value. Miniature moth orchids provide that value and much more.

The Fast Way to Initiate a New Flower Spike on Your Phalaenopsis Orchid

I ran across a secret that I am going to share with you about how to promote a new flower spike (flower stem) on your favorite orchid like the Phalaenopsis. The technique was shared with me by my good friend who loves orchids. This technique is used to help initiate another flower spike on your Phalaenopsis orchid.

After the orchid plant has finished blooming, traditionally we would cut the flower spike about 1/2 inch from the crown of the foliage.. meaning we would only leave about 1/2 inch of stem on the plant. A new technique that promotes a flower spike, on the same spike, is to cut the spike 1/2 above the first node on the flower spike going down. In other words, from the tip of the stem downward, you will locate the first node. Cut the flower spike between one to 1/2 inch above this node. In more vigorous plants, these nodes produce actual flower spikes giving the orchid a "branching" characteristic.

I haven't done my research online on this new technique.. meaning someone may have already written about it. But i have been in the orchid business for a while and I just ran across this technique myself and wanted to share it with you. I have seen this technique and it works.
I was reminded to write about this technique when i ran across an orchid today that was in our greenhouse hospital. Not all the time, but occasionally we break an orchid and it goes into the orchid hospital where it is kept then donated to a good home. Here are two photos of an orchid with a broken stem with a new flower spike. See, it does work.

Growing vanilla beans takes patience and care. A member of the orchid family, the vine blooms once a year in the spring and must be hand-pollinated within 12 hours of opening. When the beans are picked, they look more like a green bean than the vanilla bean we would recognize in the store. After harvesting the beans are cured and dried, a labor intensive process that includes wrapping them in cloth to sweat, laying them in the sun to dry, and placing them in air tight boxes. The time between harvesting and selling takes months.

This post has nothing to do with orchids but that's what blogs are for, the blog owner can post whatever is on his or her mind. Today I just want to share a thought about attitude. So many things can be going wrong in our lives and it is the decisions we make about those things that determine what the outcome is going to be. I really believe that in my heart. If I have a good attitude about everything, even the bad things, that gives me the opportunity to control those things. If I have a bad attitude for something wrong that happens, then I lose control of that and tell myself I have no responsibility for it, I am powerless, bring on the bad consequences of my thoughts... So no matter what is wrong (or right) in my life, I keep a good attitude about it and know that it is all working for the better. That's the attitude you should have too. Be a reverse paranoid (as Jack Canfield says), be an optimist. Don't worry, be happy and all those bad things will fall to the side. I am most sure of it...

If the winter ickies have got you down, a visit to a nursery or garden center is a great pick-me-up. And chances are you'll find a good selection of orchids in full bloom. While orchids look exotic, they make great houseplants. And the Phalaenopsis orchid, also called the moth orchid, is a snap to grow. It should be kept nearly dry between watering, so you don't have to be a slave to its needs like some other houseplants. Depending on the medium it's planted in, potting soil or bark, it only needs watering every week to 10 days. After it blooms, cut the flower stem back by half, about an inch above a green fleshly node and with luck the plant will re-flower.

Or-chi-da-ceous adjective: \ˌȯr-kə-ˈdā-shəs\ means of, relating to or resembling the orchids. Now that is a cool definition, don't you think? Orchidaceous also means showy or ostentatious. So the word orchidaceous (wait, I can't spell check orchidaceous, hmm) means relating to or resembling orchids. Orchids are air plants, they use the air you and I breathe to live. That means an orchidaceous plant can be a fern (also an air plant) and bromeliads (the pineapple is a bromeliad) which are also air plants. I wonder who made up this word, because I like it a lot? Don't you?

I need a holiday. A trip to Guatemala even sounds good. I don't mean to be facetious but there is a lot of violence in Guatemala. Well, I am not afraid of spiders... probably because I don't think of spiders. So, I think if I focus on the beauty of things and places I will only experience the beauty. That's simple right? Just focus on greatness and you will experience greatness. Well, what does this motivational stuff have to do with a holiday? I have heard great things about Guatemala from an experienced horticulturalist. According to him, Guatemala has more flora (the plant life in a region) than any of the other regions like Costa Rica, Peru, Belize or Honduras. He described Guatemala as a floral paradise. But he also said, "Hay mucha violencia" which in Spanish means there is a lot of violence. That means I will need to go to Guatemala myself. Someday. And marvel at the beauty of Guatemala's flora and forget about mine and Guatemala's problems.

Today was another hot day in California - at least by California standards... I know in Arizona 80 degree weather is cool. I thought summer was over, it's hot!

The air is still and you can smell the vegetation. It's not cold by any means, just cooler. You can say its a perfect time of the year - weatherwise... not too hot, just right.

What I Saw in the Orchid Greenhouse Today :)

Did you notice it was cooler last night than other summer nights? I noticed it and I'm sure many other north San Diego County residents noticed it too. That means Fall is just around the corner! Woohoo! It's ok to prune peach trees with the leaves still on them! Ha, that's the workings of an over anxious gardener.

Orchid plants that were moved into our orchid packing facility will no longer remain there overnight, since it's getting cooler, they will need to be moved into the orchid greenhouse where the temperature can be maintained. Here are the orchids I saw while they were being moved.
