Indonesian Orchids

"The Indonesian government is working... with Thailand in an effort to put its orchid products on the international markets... Thailand has a better market and transportation network."... Indonesia... its orchid technology and market expasion is far behind those of Thailand," Agriculture Minister Anton Apriantono said...The minister... visiting Thailand last year... asked orchid business owners in that country to cooperate in the marketing. ... Anton said that Thiland had extensive market networks and routine promotional activities... great in transportation of its orchids because the Thai Airways gave priority to the Thai orchid exports....Indonesia... still lacking of orchid seedling development and laboratory support.... beginning this year... would begin to develop orchid research center in a number of regions in cooperation with the agricultural schools of a number of universities.... the government would provide funding for orchid producers with low-interest rate credits.... have allocated some Rp255 billion... for the development of orchid in 2007".

Orchid Bee from Central America

"an orchid bee from Central America...

Euglossa viridissima...the male orchid bee gathers... fragrances produced by species of Gongora, Stanhopea and Lycaste orchids and uses them in courtship....male orchid bee lands on a flower and secretes lipids from glands around his mouth onto the flower petal to dissolve the fragrance compounds. He then uses special brushes on his front legs to mop them up. After lots of brushing and mopping, he hovers a few inches above the flower and transfers the compounds to special pouches in his hind legs. Then he goes back to mopping. If a female orchid bee wanders into his territory, he places a touch of perfume on velvety pads on his middle legs, which he then fans to send the enticement in her direction."In its native habitats in Mexico and Central America, male orchid bees are attracted primarily to specially blended fragrances concocted by orchids...[Bob] Pemberton [a USDA entomologist in Fort Lauderdale]... worked with USDA chemist Gregory Wheeler on a paper published in August that spells out which aromatic compounds are collected by these... male bees in Florida. The scientists removed compounds from the leg pockets, and found 27 components of orchid perfumes...Both male and female orchid bees eat nectar for food and pollinate...Female orchid bees hover and dart into different flowers to collect bits of pollen and resin for the brood nest...The female... has the ability to ''buzz pollinate'' -- vibrate her flight muscles to free pollen grains in cylindrical anthers -- or simply gather pollen that falls from open anthers."

Thailand Orchid Farms

"Orchid farms face disaster from floods...
Floods could cause a ''catastrophe'' for orchid farms in the central plains, which could lose rare breeds in damage estimated at 300 million baht. Farmers are struggling to protect their orchids against floods...said Manit Yamprayoon, a member of the Thai Orchid Farmers Association. The group represents orchid farmers in Nakhon Pathom, Ayutthaya and Pathum Thani provinces, the country's major orchid-growing areas. These provinces have been badly hit by floods since August. Some areas, especially in Ayutthaya, were also used to hold water diverted from the Chao Phraya river to break what would have been a powerful flow to Bangkok. The association's vice-chairman, Tongchaipat Deesawat, says the government failed to give farmers correct information on flood levels, and some farmers failed to build dykes high enough to protect their farms as a result....''The government should not take care only of Bangkok or economic zones,'' the group said. It has asked a lawyer to lodge a complaint with the Royal Irrigation Department, which diverted water to their farms, and vowed to sue the department if it fails to act.The Agriculture and Cooperatives Ministry... promised to give farmers fair compensation....Meanwhile, department chief Samart Chokkhanapitark said he expected that water in major rivers would return to normal levels before Nov 15, as the rate of flow of the Chao Phraya river was continuing to fall. The river is a source of tributary rivers in the central plains. However, water levels in Bangkok continued to rise."article URL : http://www.bangkokpost.com/News/10Nov2006_news16.php

Orchids for Facial Care

"recently, The House of Guerlain...launched a... product for facial care known as Orchid?e Imp?riale...the orchid... possessing what Guerlain considers the secret of eternal beauty. It is Guerlain?s belief [!!!] in the wonder of nature at work in the orchid that has inspired its quest for youth. In the desire to preserve female beauty and freshness, it sought to uncover the secret of this mythical flower...It has taken seven long years of arduous research to perfect the science behind the orchid?s magical properties. Still fascinated by the performance of the orchid?s molecular extract, Guerlain?s research scientists continue their investigations to this day. As a matter of fact, their latest advances were already presented in two major conferences: last March at the International Anti-Aging Medicine Conference in Paris, and in May at Philadelphia?s Annual Meeting of the Society for Investigative Dermatology.... orchids... four have been chosen by Guerlain?s research scientists. Working in partnership with orchid experts through phytochemical testing and work on cell cultures of human skin and DNA chips, they have taken a look at the orchid?s extraordinary properties derived from the roots of these four flowers [plants ???].Advanced anti-aging technology in the Imperial Orchid Molecular Extract was found to give cells... functional longevity. To attest to this fact, the new Guerlain lotion gives five specific key effects in the battle against aging.First, it preserves the existing cell membrane which is believed to be the key in attaining youthful skin.Second, the extract boosts the capacity of cells to regenerate.Third, proteins responsible for the protection of DNA known as Metallothioneins are maintained and promoted through the extract.Fourth, tissue inflammation is controlled through the stimulation of the ?longevity gene? called IL-10.Lastly, tissue damage caused by the attack of free radicals is addressed by combating the effects of what the researchers call cutaneous immunosesescence. To put it simply, the extract controls the internal deterioration of tissue at the cellular level....To prove its effectiveness, a clinical test was carried out by dermatologists on 32 women who used the product daily for a month and reported a 50-percent reduction in wrinkles and fine lines. On the other hand, based on the self-evaluation of 60 women over a four-week period, 85 percent attested to more supple and even-toned skin, while 80 percent observed firmer and more radiant skin."source :http://showbizandstyle.inq7.net/lifestyle/lifestyle/view_article.php?article_id=30297

New Orchid Blog

Welcome! This is the new orchid blog to compliment Orchidaceous.com. This new site is still in Pre-alpha, which means we're not even at Beta yet! Our developers are working hard to get this site up and running - actually Google is doing that, we will just be adding content. So while we're busy working to Send Orchids, our content writers are working on this orchid site.

The site will allow orchid farms to post pictures of their products. They can also sell their products! This is novel. We don't know of any other site, other than Ebay and the large portal sites like Shopping.com, Pricegrabber.com etc., that focuses exclusively on orchid plants. Since orchids encompass a huge family of plants, we think this site will be very popular for both commercial orchid farms and hobby growers.

This blog will be a Soapbox of orchid discussions, advice and pictures. Come back often as we hope to update this blog regularly.

We would like to thank Intruix Technologies who will be hosting Orchidaceous.com, K-soft of India who will help develope the site and I would like to pat myself on the back for thinking of this site! :)

If you want to send me an email, you can email me here: steve@1888orchids.com

Sincerely,
Steve Peralta
