Kathy, here's the answer to your orchid bloom question
Orchid Question: When the flower has bloomed and then starts to dry up should i clip it off or let it fall off?
Dear Kathy,
Most of us may be too busy to monitor our orchids as much as we'd like to. Occasionally, an orchid bloom will dry on the plant since we didn't have enough time to pinch it or the bloom may just fall off the orchid. I like to pinch the dead blooms from the plant, before they have fallen off the orchid. You should always remove the dead flowers not only on plants but flower bouquets too. You don't want anything dead near you, not to mention it makes the rest of the flowers look prettier when you remove the dead flowers. So, if you see a dead or wilting flower, clip it off with scissors or pinch it off with your fingers. I use my fingers, unless the bloom just falls off on its own.
I water my orchids with filtered water. I have a 75 gallon aquarium and when I find an orchid in my house that is feather weight from not watering, I will dunk it in the aquarium and soak the growing media. It's a little tricky when the orchid is grown in bark! All other orchids are watered using a watering can and purified water. I use the aquarium dunking technique only on very dry orchids and my fish don't seem to mind.
Here are some photos of orchids in my home. I am lucky because orchids re-bloom in my house and my opinion is, if your home feels comfortable to you (temperature, tone) it will feel comfortable to your orchids. So drum-roll please, here are the photos of orchids in my home that have re-bloomed on their own, woohoo.

Egg-stra Beautiful Yellow Orchids for Easter
I found my daughter's bright yellow Easter basket and bright yellow Easter ears. We will be needing them because we will be spending the day at the park just like last year for an Easter egg hunt and fun. I need to give my daughter's basket to her godmother so she can fill it with goodies before Sunday. I'm taking my mom a yellow orchid for her table. Wow! It's Easter, spring is here and everything looks so beautiful, especially when you are always surrounded by orchids. Happy Easter everyone!

Cool new look and my favorite spring blooming orchids
Well spring is here and what better time to share with you my favorite spring blooming orchids, that is orchids that bloom in march during the transition period between winter and summer and something about an equinox too... Ok, here are some beautiful photos of spring blooming orchids. Per your requests, I am including the name of each orchid. I forgot to do that in earlier posts and there is nothing worse than seeing a beautiful orchid flower and not being able to see the name. Then you have to post on your favorite social site and ask but you don't want to look like an amateur so you never find out the name of the orchid. :( Happy spring and enjoy.

National Orchid Garden in Singapore
Walt Off, owner of Waldor Orchids in Linwood, is re-creating the National Orchid Garden in Singapore, which has been breeding orchids since 1928. Besides a large bamboo pavilion, bronze gazebo, and waterfall, he plans a 15-foot "orchid tree" and more than 1,000 phalaenopsis, cattleya, and vanda orchids grown in Florida, Hawaii, and Linwood.

Green Orchids
Green orchids are beautiful because the hue of the green within each orchid varies. But the tone is a lime green color that appears to glows.

Make 'em Smile With a Birthday Bouquet of Orchid Flowers

Cut orchids are a great birthday gift because the flowers last a long time and they are very beautiful.

I made it a goal to always have flowers on my kitchen table. So I can tell you first hand that cut orchid flowers are very long lasting. Cut orchids like dendrobiums will drop all the flowers or they may shrivel on the flower spike. You simply pinch the dead flower from the flower spike. The tip of the flower spike will still have buds. Do not remove these and you have a challenge to see the buds become flowers. With proper care, the buds will continue to flower allowing the flower stem to stay blooming for months. I have seen cut dendrobium orchids in a glass vase for months.

Not only do cut orchid flowers last long, they are exotic. Probably the best word to describe an orchid is exquisite. So cut orchid flowers are exquisitely exotic flowers. Just being around a bouquet of cut orchids make you feel special.
Celebrate a birthday with something different - cut orchid flowers!
