Autumn is here!  You can tell by the coolness in the air.. everything seems just a little quieter in the fall too.. a perfect time to blog.

Orange is the color of Autumn so I am re-sharing one of my favorite orchids called Doritaenopsis Surf Song OX "Gold Orange." The flower color changes depending on the age of the flower.  As the flowers age, the color lightens slightly.  The combination of the bright orange and bright fuchsia center beckons the orchid lover to take a closer look.. Do you think Autumn carries more gold in its pocket than all the other seasons? What's your favorite season?

Cattleya Green Emerald "Queen" Orchid Flowers Smell Like Bubble Gum

The orchid flowers of Cattleya Green Emerald "Queen" are hard to the touch and very fragrant!  The flowers resemble those of another species orchid called Cattleya guttata ("the spotted Cattleya orchid"). Cattleya Green Emerald "Queen"  is a bifoliate Cattleya species of orchid.  The word bifoliate means it has two leaves from when the orchid stem grows.  One plant usually produces two flowers buds that are green then open up to this spectacular orchid flower.  The orchid flowers smell like bubble gum.  As a kid I chomped on a gum called Hubba Bubba and these orchid flowers smell like that gum.. Yummy!!

Hi Everyone!!

It's been a while since I've posted to this blog or said hello to my friends. :(  So here it goes.. Hello Friends, I'm back, I missed you!!

Doritaenopsis Jiaho Kitty Face "Rainbow" has to be by far our most popular orchid plant in the phalaenopsis category.  The orchid flowers offer alluring color combinations of green, pink and fuchsia.  The stem on which the orchid flowers are perched bend and offer an interesting shape to the overall orchid.  The green foliage is distinct and an orchid lover who cares for these special plants can pick out a Dtps. Jiaho Kitty Face "Rainbow" when it is still in bud.  What do you think, do you like it?

Cymbidium Dorothy Stockstill "Forgotten Fruits" Orchid Flowers

In California, cymbidium orchid plants are usually grown outside under shade cloth.  The last few days have been cold in Southern California so many of the blooming cymbidiums are brought indoors in the orchid greenhouse where temperature controlled ecosystems keep these tropical plants toasty.  One such orchid plant is Cymbidium Dorothy Stockstill "Forgotten Fruits" - the delightfully fragrant cymbidium with mini cymbidium flowers.  This beauty is well protected in a warm orchid greenhouse..

Giving thanks brings into your life that which you are giving thanks for.. hmm.. makes sense to me.  So I'm giving thanks for peace on earth.. and this beautiful orange orchid flower.  What are you thankful for? 

Orchid Plant - Phalaenopsis Yu Pin Pearl

Here is an orchid that is special beyond compare - Phalaenopsis Yu Pin Pearl. So many things make this orchid plant and flowers special I don't know where to start.  Ok.. first the flowers.  Pure white blossoms are speckeled with dark fuchsia spots - not one spot is the same size as the other - not one flower is alike! The flowers are medium sized but if this orchid is grown in a larger pot, the flowers tend to be a bit bigger.  

Orchid plants that produce flowers with spots are known as Harlequin orchids.. hmm, I wonder why.  Did the grower know these orchid plants were going to be so special?

Another thing that makes Phalaenopsis Yu Pin Pearl special is that it is a challenge to grow.. I don't know what you consider rare, but I consider that from 100 seedlings less than half make it to mature size.. like the one shown in the photo.. Finally, Phalaenopsis Yu Pin Pearl is very vigorous and easy to grow in the home.  I have taken  Phalaenopsis Yu Pin Pearl home so I know from experience it does well in the home by a well lit window.  If you get a mature plant, hang on to it.

The miniature orchid plant craze is in full swing.  Not long ago mini orchids like this one called Doritaenopsis Sogo Vivien "Marginata" were a novelty, even rare.  They still are rare and a novelty but thanks to their popularity, miniature orchid plants abound in our greenhouse and florist customers have come to love them too.  I hope you like mini orchids. They are compact and fit just about anywhere with bright light.  Since they are so small, we have a tendency to love them more.  With a lot of love, these mini orchids will bloom time and again with little care.  Enjoy!

Maxillaria tenuifolia

It is so appropriate that this beautiful orchid plant called Maxillaria tenuifolia is in bloom in the summer.  Just about everything about this orchid plant is unique.  The bulbs known as pseudo-bulbs grow from a stem which normally grow out from the growing medium.  As the plant matures, the bulbs grow taller on these stems.  A closer look at the flower reveals very prominent petals while the sepals (all orchids have three sepals) point forward.  The center of the flower looks like a bee.   Maxillaria tenuifolia is also very fragrant.  The flowers produce a sweet scent of coconut.  So I close my eyes and take a whiff and imagine I am on a beach somewhere... :)

Who can resist the delicate beauty of orchid flowers? Orchid flowers come in many colors.  The color orange is a new color and here we have a orange phalaenopsis orchid called Doritaenopsis Surf Song "OX" Gold Orange.  A phalaenopsis with orange flowers.. who would have thought this was possible a few years back? Orchid breeding has come a long ways don't you agree?
